3 Important Tips After Gum Treatment In Singapore

Are you planning to undergo a gum treatment in Singapore? Gum disease is never fun, neither for the patient nor for the periodontist. But if gum disease is left untreated, it can pose serious problems to the patient’s dental health and will eventually cause tooth loss. Gums protect and support the teeth as well as the tissue that holds those pearly whites to the bone.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused by bacterial growth inside the mouth and usually starts in areas that you are not brushing. Swelling of the gums can be one of the first symptoms of gum disease. So, it is critical to visit your dentist if you notice this sign so he can recommend a periodontist for your gum treatment. The dental procedure may involve cutting into or removing diseased tissue from the mouth, removing a tooth, correcting jaw problems, and repairing a cleft lip or palate.

However, the treatment doesn’t end after the surgery. There are important tips that you should keep in mind after the procedure to ensure the efficacy of the treatment.

Take Prescription For Pain

Your oral surgeon may prescribe medication to alleviate the pain. Feeling some pain once the anaesthetic wears off is pretty normal which might last for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. You might feel discomfort or soreness at the site of the surgery for 3 to 5 days, although the amount of discomfort may vary from one person to another.

In case you are taking other prescription medicines or supplements, be sure to inform your dentist or oral surgeon to avoid complications. Take the medication exactly as your oral surgeon has instructed. If the pain does not subside or get any better after 48 hours, you may call your dentist or visit the clinic to discuss the matter.

Monitor Bleeding

For the first hour or two hours after the gum surgery, it is possible that you will bleed. The area may continue to bleed for up to 24 hours. But don’t panic. The blood and saliva mix together inside the mouth and this will make it look like you are bleeding more than you think you really are. If you cannot control the bleeding after 4 hours, try pressing firmly a gauze pad on the area then call your dentist to consult the situation.

Periodontics experts or oral surgeon will use a gauze pad over the wound to minimise the amount of bleeding. Make sure to keep the pad in place for an hour or so no matter how soggy it becomes. Apply firm and constant pressure on the gauze pad by closing your teeth firmly on it. After one hour, you can replace the gauze pad with a new one and do the same thing for another hour. Get enough rest and keep you head raised high to slow down the circulation of blood. The day after the treatment rinses your mouth gently with warm water about 4 or 5 times a day.

Ease The Swell

During the first 24 hours after the gum treatment procedure, your face may swell and it may last for 5 to 7 days. You can try to alleviate the swelling by putting a cold compress on the swollen area. If you don’t have a cold compress, you can wrap ice cubes in a towel or a bag of frozen products and place on the swollen area for 10 minutes. Remove the cold compress for 10 minutes, and then put it back for another 10 minutes. You can repeat this over and over again for the first 24 hours.

Gum treatment helps keep teeth

On the second day after your gum treatment in Singapore, you may use a warm compress on the area. Once the swelling starts to go down, don’t fret if you see the bruise on your face. The bruising may last for up to 10 days after your procedure.
